Course Access

No special access is required for most of the course. Most access will be from the main entrance to Motts Run Reservoir and be right there. The Rock Climbing (Station 6) will be a short hike to their position. Iron Ring if used, will have drivable access to that point (just like the Rappahannock Canoe Race).

Please wear your Emergency Communications RVARC Event Staff vest if you have one or contact me to borrow one of the loaners. All event staff and participants are being told to look for the RVARC vest. You will be in the woods. Being visible is a must.

Check-in

Check-ins vary for this event. Please see the assignment sheet. Please be onsite and ready to check in before your shift starts. Net Control and Director Shadow, I have your time starting at 0600 so you can be onsite and set up before the majority of the racers start to arrive.

Mission

Our primary mission is eyes on the course to provide safety. In the event of a emergency, contact Net Control as soon as possible. Cell service is almost non-existent at Motts Run and several other locations on the course. Calling 911 is not an option in most locations. Safety is our number one job.

Our secondary job is to relay information to/from event staff.

This event is essentially a land navigation scavenger hunt. This year it is a 4 hour hike race or 15 hour race which will have a paddle, bike, rock climb (option) and 2 hike portions. The 4 hour race will be entirely within Mott Run. There will be "Check Points" each team will have to locate. Any of the people stationed on the actual course, don't position yourself right next too actual checkpoint the racers are trying to find. Also, no hints or allowing any of the racers (or potential racers in advance of the event) to see any of the maps I share with you.

If you want to see the full information on the race it can be found at https://www.broadrunoffroad.org/fall-foliage-adventure-race/

Parking

Parking is available at the main entrance to Motts Run and is available at all other locations. Iron Ring if used we are working on access. Obey all normal parking laws.

Equipment

Please have your RVARC vest on if you have one. Please let me know if you don't have one and I'll make arrangement to get you a loaner in advance.

This will be a mixed event for equipment. Come locations will be able to use an HT, other with need a mobile and mast. The following locations I know will need a mobile and mast: Motts Run (net control) and Iron Ring. The Rock Climbing station I'm not certain as I've never been there before, but given the terrain of that area and what it is like at Motts Run I would assume that you would need more power than an HT. Since they stated it was a short hike from parking to the rock climbing wall, you may need a crossband repeater at your vehicle and a HT with you at the wall. All other stations should be able to use HTs.

Operational Parameters

I'm simplifying the frequency plan for this event. Based on some testing and past experience, all stations should be able to hit K4TS. If we use Iron Ring they will need a mobile and a mast.

We will use K4TS 147.015MHz PL 79.7 as our Primary Repeater and AE4ML UHF 442.850MHZ (+) PL79.7 as our Backup Repeaters. 146.490 MHz PL79.7 Simplex can be used as a backup to Net Control inside Motts Run if you cannot hit the repeater with an HT. T

Please program all 3 frequencies into your radio prior to the event. This is going to require some coordination and good directed net discipline.

Net control will have everyone's cell phone number.

Media Relations

Any questions asked by the public or the media, are to be directed to the Fall Foliage Adventure Run staff members. Fell free to answer question about amateur radio. We are all spread out, so spreading the word about amateur radio will be everyone's job.
